Efforts to Improve Customer Service

July 23rd, 2008 by Nicholas

The marketing staff at The Catholic Company has been taking part in a customer service exercise this summer. Each of us are taking week long shifts working in customer service. It’s been a good experience for all of us, but it means YOU will have even better experiences in the future.

We’re transitioning our previous customer service manager into another role and we’re preparing to welcome someone new to our team to take command of customer care. We are also changing the way we approach customer care and making lots of small changes we hope will add up to a whole new experience for you, our customers.

Have you had an experience with our customer service you thought was stellar or not so hot? Do you have a suggestion as to how we could improve? Well, I want to hear about it! Please comment on this post and I will take everyone’s suggestions into consideration. Thank you!

There’s A Choo Choo In My Room

July 23rd, 2008 by Nicholas

As a father who’s oldest is just learning to speak well, my life is blessed with the cute things children say.  Last night we had a really long thunderstorm hang over our home.  And it just happened to be around bed time.  About 20 minutes after she went to bed, I looked up from the computer and found my daughter standing in the hallway.  I asked what was wrong and she told be she wanted to switch beds, to sleep in the bed in our room.  I asked her why she wanted to switch beds and she said, “There’s a choo choo in my room.”  Awww, I felt inside.  She finally fell asleep in her own bed as I dozed next to her.

I’m so happy I had a daughter first.  If only to avoid being peed on during diaper changes.  Of course in reality, I haven’t gotten much of that action with my son anyhoo.

The Priests Album Due in November 2008

July 21st, 2008 by Nicholas

I realize I’m a little behind on this one, seeing as how The Priests signed with Sony/BMG in April. We just got wind of these 3 evangelists this weekend. By the sound of their contract, they’ve made sure the typical ills of the music industry do not pervade their music or their behavior. The contract specifically states that their priestly duties take priority over recording and they will not do anything that contradicts the teaching of the Catholic Church.

Saint Joseph Home Sale Kit

July 9th, 2008 by Nicholas

My wife an I sold our condo in Colorado yesterday. Thank God! And Saint Joseph, too!

We asked Saint Joseph, the patron saint of house hunters/sellers and people in doubt, to intercede for us. We asked for his prayers and decided to purchase the Saint Joseph Home Sale Kit to enhance our devotion. We did not have any other devotional to Saint Joseph in our house, so this kit was perfect. Unlike the superstitious recommendations for the home sale kit, we did not bury the statue in the yard or upside down or anything like that. Though we had no intention to do so we couldn’t anyway because the statue was 1,500 miles away from the real estate up for sale! Having the statue displayed in our current home reminded us to pray often and to trust in the Lord even when we lost hope.

Saint Joseph also interceded for my parents who sold a long-time rental property they had last December and this month their home in Nebraska since they’ve moved back to Colorado upon my father’s retirement.

The housing market is in despair.  Giving the Saint Joseph Home Sale Kit to someone in need can really make a difference in their life.

Catholics Come Home

July 5th, 2008 by Nicholas

Catholics Come Home has produced an amazing 2 minute video showcasing the impact on society that the Catholic Church has had throughout it’s 2000 year history. The site itself is geared towards non-practicing Catholics to come home and rejoin the Catholic Church. There is also plenty of information for non-Catholics and practicing Catholic alike, especially as it relates to helping others “come home” to the Catholic Church.

Matthew Kelly has written a wonderful book titled Rediscovering Catholicism that can help all people find peace in the Catholic Church.

Statewide Advocacy

July 3rd, 2008 by Nicholas

Today marks the launch of Catholic Voice NC is meant to be a nonpartisan political guide for North Carolina Catholics. The Bishops will focus first on several topics including the death penalty, abortion, and same-sex marriage. An email list on the site will send notifications when it’s appropriate to contact legislators on particular topics of interest.

“This is one more way of helping Catholic voters choose their candidates with accurate information provided by the candidate, and an informed conscience,” said Bishop Michael Burbidge of the Diocese of Raleigh. “These legislative issues, they come so quickly,” Burbidge said. “We need to use technology that’s going to allow us quickly to get issues identified.”

Trying to be Green

July 2nd, 2008 by Nicholas

One theme of Catholic Social Teaching according to the USCCB is Care for God’s Creation:

We show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation. Care for the earth is not just an Earth Day slogan, it is a requirement of our faith. We are called to protect people and the planet, living our faith in relationship with all of God’s creation. This environmental challenge has fundamental moral and ethical dimensions that cannot be ignored.

As a Direct Marketing Association member and a mail order cataloger, we’re responsible for practicing The Green 15. The Green 15 are fifteen self-governing policies laid out by the DMA to help members ensure their mailing practices meet a certain level of green-ness or deliver environmental benefits. Specifically, they encompass paper procurement, list hygiene, design, packaging, and recycling/pollution reduction.

The Catholic Company follows these guidelines to minimize our impact on the environment. I’ll follow this up with specifics over the coming weeks. In the mean time, here’s a neat little poll regarding direct mail’s affect on our country’s landfills.  I’ll provide the answer in a future post.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, Direct Mail accounts for how much municipal waste in the United States annually?

New Media Applications for Catholic Churches

June 28th, 2008 by Nicholas

I was thinking about new media applications like blogs and podcasting as it related to the evangelization. I really believe these new media applications have the ability to evangelize in the real world, especially as it relates to the Catholic Church.  I’m the webmaster for my parish, Queen of the Apostles, in Belmont, NC.  We’ve been posting Sunday’s Gospel and Homily each week since January 27th, 2008.  And to my surprise, we’ve received several comments from current parishioners and former parishioners of Father Frank regarding the enjoyment of being able to listen to Father’s homilies online.  With the right technologically minded individuals, you can help your parish evangelize in a similar way.
